BBFC

The BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification and it is a non-governmental organisation that is responsible for the the classification of films and other video media that is released in the UK.

For our murder mystery we are looking for it to be about a 15 age rating as it means there will me a larger audience that can watch it and still have some violence and action in it without it being too unsuitable for viewers above the age of 15 as we feel age 12 could be a bit too young since there would be some violence in it and we don't want to be too restricted with the story line. Also, based on our questionnaire results the majority of people who took it, said that they prefer a 15 age rated murder mystery film.

The usual age ratings for a murder mystery/ thriller would be anywhere between 12 to 18 depending on how visual it is, the language or types of scenes shown in it and how gruesome the murder at question is for viewers.

  1. It can be quite interesting to look at controversial BBFC decisions. Woman in Black was one that the BBFC admitted it got wrong (should have been a 15). Film makers often push for a lower certificate because this widens their audience. I remember reading an interview with the maker of 'Made in Dagenham' who was furious about his film being made 15 due to the amount of swearing. He argued that his message was one of empowerment for young women and that 12 year olds should see it. Was this the main reason or was it the money?! Who knows?!
